The Power of Solar for your Home

solar house

We’ve explored various roofing options before in a past blog, but we wanted to go a little bit deeper into the amazing benefits of solar roofing, particularly if you live (or want to live) in San Antonio or the surrounding area. The market for alternative, renewable energy sources is growing rapidly and will likely only continue to gain momentum.

Not only is solar roofing a wonderfully green and eco-conscious option where you end up generating money instead of burning it, but locally, many electricity companies are offering consumers rebates when they make energy-saving improvements to their homes.

SAVE MONEY WITH SOLAR

CPS Energy, which services San Antonio, offers a rebate on solar photovoltaic systems that convert sunlight to electricity. Currently, the power company that services Schertz is also providing solar rebates to consumers.

In fact, these company offer a wide variety of rebates on things from pool pumps to air conditioners and new construction. While these rebates aren’t indefinite, it’s worth noting that rebates on solar roofs have been consistent. CPS even offers one for solar water heaters, up to $2,000. Energy Star estimates that you can reduce your electric bill by 50% when you switch to solar water heaters. For specific information on rebates, it’s best to contact the companies directly for details.

SOLAR SHINGLES vs. PANELS

Solar panels have been around a lot longer than solar shingles, which first came into use in 2011. Shingles are installed similarly to asphalt shingles and, in fact, replace the asphalt shingles where they are installed, which can result in modest savings.

Solar shingles can be installed on various types of roofs and most people find them much more aesthetically pleasing than the somewhat bulky appearance of panels. However, panels are considered to be a touch more efficient than shingles, but not by much. Currently, the conversion efficiency of shingles is 19.9% while panels are 20.3%.

OTHER BENEFITS OF SOLAR

-          The financial rewards are by far the best reason to install a solar roof. In case it wasn’t clear, not only do you save money using solar, but if the conditions are right and let’s face it they are in South Texas, you may even start receiving a check from your energy company after a while.

-          Over the long run, a homeowner might save $20,000 over a 20 year time period with a solar roof, at least that’s the national average. In Texas, it will be more like $30,000.

-          Using solar power is a reliable, secure and independent resource that cannot be controlled by a company or agency, which is why even the military is working to install solar power systems.

-          Interestingly, solar power creates jobs. As an energy source, solar power creates almost three times more jobs than money invested in coal or natural gas.

Besides the cost of initial installation, the disadvantages of having a solar roof are virtually non-existent. If this is something you’d like to consider for your new custom home, give us a call at 210-494-5400.

San Antonio Real Estate Market Update – Summer 2015

It’s hard to believe we’re midway through the year! Here’s a look at where San Antonio stands in terms of the current real estate and economic market:

Even with the significant rainfall slowing construction of new homes and commercial buildings, everywhere you go it’s easy to see the growth that’s taking place in the city, particularly downtown, with condos, apartments and hotels sprouting up faster than weeds.

According to the San Antonio Business Journal, the West side of SA is also seeing a lot of growth with mixed-use developments becoming the “new frontier.” Just last month, KFW Engineers & Surveying, a local civil engineering firm, announced they will be building a multimillion-dollar headquarters off of Loop 1604.

According to Zillow, the median home value in San Antonio is now $153,600, which means our home values have gone up 8.7% over the past year and predictions indicate they will rise another 2.8% within the next year. Already the median price of homes currently listed is $189,900.

Some may view this growth as a negative, particularly if you’re wanting to buy and miss the cheap rates of just a few years ago. However, you can also look at it as San Antonio is finally rising to its potential.

Bexar County added almost 5,000 new jobs last year with another 4,000 likely to be added by the end of this year. Forecasters are claiming the city’s “new energy economy” is responsible for this significant growth.

In particular, CPS Energy’s New Energy Economy Initiative has been a primary catalyst – they’ve brought in seven new companies into the Alamo city, which translates into 1,000 new jobs and an estimated income of more than $40 million.

If this kind of growth in the tech / energy industries continues, San Antonio will be put on the map for more than just the Spurs and River Walk. At Stone Creek Custom Homes, we’re excited to see the bar being raised and are more than ready to meet the challenge!

We believe there’s no better time to consider building a custom home than right now. For more information, please call us today at 210-494-5400.

Get to Know the Guys Behind Stone Creek Custom Homes

Jesse with his family

Life can often seem random, but sometimes those chance occurrences are the ones that stick – as is the case with Stone Creek Custom Homes’ two founders, Jason Gale and Jesse Pigott. We thought you might like to learn a little bit more about these two gentlemen, as they’re not the kind of guys that talk much about themselves. They’re usually far more interested in their clients, the work they’re doing, and of course, their families.

They first met over a decade ago when Jason was selling land, and Jesse bought a lot from him out in Timberwood Park. Both born and raised in San Antonio – Jason went to Castle Hills First Baptist High School while Jesse attended Clark High School – they also shared (and still do!) a mutual appreciation for hunting and fishing.

Jason:  I was building my house with another friend of mine, and it wasn’t going as well as I thought it could have. At the same time, Jesse was building his own home with another of friend of his. I had a lot in Timberwood so I approached him about building a spec house, which we sold before we were even done framing.

Jesse:  It happened by chance, but one project led to another and it snowballed. That’s basically how this whole thing got going.

Jesse originally worked in sales in a completely different industry, but had aspirations of owning his own company.

Jesse:  We love making someone else’s dreams a reality. Seeing something start from a scratch pad design and evolve into something you’re living in is pretty cool.

As for home life, Jason and Jesse are very family-oriented and love spending time with their families. Jason balances his love for flying, fishing and hunting and family time. He has a passion for showing the kids his love for the outdoors. With a lovely wife, a daughter and two sons, life is busy. Some of their favorite memories are at the beach in Florida and Port Aransas.

If Jason and the boys had it their way, they would spend every moment at the ranch or fishing in Port Mansfield, hopefully catching swordfish. Fishing usually means catch and release, but the family gets super excited when it’s served on the dinner table. As the youngest says, “I like that swordfish chicken!”

Jason’s family also run two fireworks stands around the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.

Jason:  It’s more of a hobby. My daughter loves it. She takes charge, helps with inventory, pricing, and sales. It’s a great way for her to learn how to run a business for herself. She basically does it all, and I’m just there to help.

Jesse, who remarried a year ago to a beautiful lady, now has a family of five kids. Jesse also enjoys hunting and shares that passion with his kids. His family loves to spend time together at their home away from home at lake LBJ, swimming, riding jet skis and just relaxing.

Jesse:  We go there to eat, drink and listen to good music. It’s one of our favorite spots.
