Transform Your Bedroom for Fall

4-hdr

There’s nothing more cozy than a cool night in the fall snuggled up in bed with a good book, your favorite record on the turntable and, to top it off, a hot cup of cocoa (with or without marshmallows) sitting on your nightstand. This all sounds wonderful… until you look up and realize that your bedroom just doesn’t fit the mood, the season or even your personal style anymore. When that happens it’s time to find some new inspiration, so here you go!

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back, but this time, it’s even cooler. You can choose from metallic paint designs on colored wallpaper, large pattern designs or unusual, textured wallpaper that can make a great conversation starter when friends come to visit. As always, just be sure you love it before you give it a green light, because once it’s up it’s not coming down easily.

A Little Bit of Paradise

The tropical motif is in, which is perfect in South Texas, where we have high temps throughout the year. Tropical patterns on sheets and comforters are a fun way to alter the look of your bedroom. These looks aren’t over the top – they’re much more subdued than what you might expect. Think dark blue with white palm fronds. Add some tropical looking plants and some artistic bamboo pieces or Hawaiian artwork and voila!

Go Retro

Vintage is always in, but can take some time and effort to do well. By shopping at garage sales or online you can find some beautiful vintage pieces, like an antique chaise lounge or 1950’s brass Hollywood Regency headboard that will make you feel like you just stepped into a Humphry Bogart or Cary Grant film, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Scandinavian Style

If you love simplicity and muted tones, now might be the time to transform your bedroom into a Nordic wonderland. Scandinavian-inspired décor, including warm wooden accents, animal pelts and wall colors such as gray and off-white are currently all the rage and create a clean-looking and organized bedroom that’s soothing for your evening respite.

Hi-Tech Sleep

The Sleep Number c2 Bed - it’s not exactly décor-related, but it’s a must-have for tech lovers. It’s a mattress that helps you optimize your sleep. It not only offers adjustable firmness, so neither you or your partner ever have to compromise again, but it actually tracks your sleep cycle, giving you important insights when you’re in dream land.

The Garage of Your Dreams

Garage projects can be a lot of fun. It’s often an under-utilized or cluttered space in many homes, but for some of us, the garage can be a haven. We recently completed a garage addition project for a client of ours in the Hill Country that included a professional auto lift so he could easily work on his truck at home.

Just like every other room in the house, when we’re building a custom home for our clients, the best way to maximize your space is to start with your interests and lifestyle. Depending on what you’re into, your garage can accommodate those needs and become one of your favorite rooms.

Here are some ideas on things you can do to your new or old garage:

The Ultimate Workshop

There are a few key elements to building your ultimate workshop. First, you’ll need to have plenty of electrical outlets installed, so you don’t have messy cords all over the floor. When it comes to a workshop space, you can never have too many outlets!

Who doesn’t want or need more storage? Especially when it comes to a workshop space, we suggest built-in open cabinets for all of your tool storage. You can also put lockable doors on some of the cabinets for any expensive tools.

Lighting is another important aspect of a garage workshop. Track lighting is an easy option to give you some directional lighting and overall room illumination. If you want to up the cool factor, consider installing a motion direction on/off switch for when your hands are full of hammers, nails, sawdust or whatever else you’ve got going on.

A serious workshop isn’t complete without a dust collection systemcentral vacuum and air ventilation system. All three of these systems will keep the dust, pollen and other heavy particulate matter off of you and your equipment.

Do yourself a favor and if you plan on spending any time in your garage at all, have it insulated to help it stay cool or warm, when needed. A few floor AC units or space heaters and your DIY projects are good to go!

Entertainment Room

Instead of being a throw-away space, how about transforming the garage into an entertainment space with a fun theme like an old fashioned soda fountain or an arcade? It could be a great space for the kids to play in without concern for spills or breaks.

You could even have foldable tables and chairs handy and enjoy happy hour inside or outside the garage. With the right décor and tasty craft cocktails, it might even be better than your backyard patio!

Finer Décor

As with everything we do at Stone Creek Custom Homes, the sky’s the limit. Whatever you envision can be made reality. Impress even the most jaded style critics with a garage fit for a king. Imagine a garage that’s outfitted with beautiful wood cabinetry and red brick flooring, a flat-screen HD TV on the wall and a built-in safe for valuables.

You can also go retro with open shelving, marine lighting and reclaimed wood. All you need is an antique car to complete the look! However, James Bond enthusiasts might appreciate a more sleek visage with floor-to-ceiling ebony cabinets that hide any mess, so all you see is your Aston Martin DB5. Hey, a guy can dream, right?!

2015 Home Trends – Hot or Not?

If you’re going to put time and money into building a new home, you might as well make sure it’s everything you want it to be. Here are some fun new trends designers are anticipating for 2015. Read on to see if any of them spark your imagination!

ARCHITECTURE & FURNITURE

According to Zillow, mid-century modern elements in architecture as well as furniture is one of the biggest up-and-coming home design trends for 2015. However, keep in mind that trends such as these should serve as inspiration, but should not be overdone!

COLORS

Everyone’s talking about colors, but what colors are hottest is up for discussion.  According to Sherwin-Williams, people are opting for brighter colors now that we’re out of a recession.  Check out their Coral Reef, color #6606, which they’re saying reflects America’s new optimism for the future.

Pinterest seems to support this idea, as a majority of the color trends for spring on display are certainly bright, bubbly and even traditional Easter holiday colors.

Conde Nast Traveler would have you believe that ochre is the “it” color of the moment. Inspired by recent fashion trends, ochre is transitioning into home design, where it makes a dramatic impact when paired with rich, velvet jewel tones.

Remodelista’s pick for interior wall color of the year is a gorgeous yet humble pale, dusty pink called “Pink Ground” from Farrow & Ball. It pairs especially well with black or grey furniture.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

An organic look for appliances is a continuing trend. Buttons on dishwashers are being gracefully hidden; refrigerators and ovens are made to blend into the kitchen’s décor, so that sometimes they’re even hard to find! Take a look at the Zen Oven by Amica, which has a crisp white façade with a simple wood handle and two black buttons –  the perfect accent to a minimalist kitchen.

Marble backsplashes are being used to create an exotic look and accent piece in any kitchen, while jewel-toned tiles in fun shapes are a stylish option for master baths or even guest baths and go great with vintage tubs.

THE LIBRARY

Surprisingly, in a country obsessed with getting online, libraries filled with old-fashioned books (made with paper!) are back in style. According to Details.com, libraries with actual books are making a comeback. Maybe it has something to do with the popularity of Downton Abbey, or perhaps people are simply nostalgic for the old days. Even VCR’s are coming back!

Stone Creek Custom Homes, along with our interior designers, can help you make all of these important decisions. Call us today at 210-494-5400 for a complementary consultation!
