Stunning Local Glass Art for Your Home

Caliente Hot Glass Demo

Caliente Hot Glass Demo

Unless you’re lucky enough to have stumbled across it at a gallery or upscale restaurant, you probably aren’t aware of the talented glass artists that live right here in San Antonio.

Glass art makes a dramatic statement in the home. There are all types of glass that can be used to adorn your new or existing house, such as a chandelier, wall piece or a vase or sculpture. Regardless of its form, glass is always a beautiful and unique showpiece.

The glass artists in town often have artwork available in their galleries or studios, but particularly if you’re having a custom home built, you’ll want to commission a piece to be designed exclusively for you. Here’s a couple of artists we think you might like:

Glen Andrews of Caliente Hot Glass Studio

Glen Andrews is a highly creative and intelligent artist who enjoys expanding his skills by always incorporating new methods, including methods he invents by trial and error. Glen and the other offhand glass artists (the proper term for blown glasswork) at Caliente have been ramping up this past year. Besides expanding their studio space, they also have a new gallery for showcasing their work.

Every second Sunday of the month, what they call “2nd Sunday Funday,” you can enjoy live glass blowing demos, shopping and meeting the artists themselves. Caliente also offers private glass blowing experiences for those who want to get more up close and personal with hot glass.

Garcia Art Glass

Gini Garcia is easily the most successful local glass artist, sometimes compared to the famous Chihuly (who has a gorgeous piece up at the downtown library). Garcia Art Glass was founded in ’98 and she has designed pieces both locally and internationally for hundreds of residences, restaurants and other businesses. However because her work is highly sought after, commissioned pieces will likely take a significant amount of time to finish and might cost you almost as much as your house!

Jake Zollie Harper of Zollie Glass

Located in the Blue Start Arts Complex, Zollie Glass is a gallery that showcases torchwork glass art – that is, glass made by using a torch. This is much different than offhand glass and is typically used for making small scale pieces, such as marbles.

Jake, who has collaborated with Glen Andrews, is also exploring new ways to apply his skillset. He produces commissioned pieces and even creates small pieces that fit together to make larger sculptures.

Jason Lawson of Lawson Glass

Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country, not far from us, is a uniquely gifted artist by the name of Jason Lawson. Although Jason has the artistry and skill to make any number of glass art, he has found his niche of late by making and selling hot-sculpted solid crystal antler chandeliers that are exceptional in every sense of the word. Although most of his clients are outside of Texas, his style seems a perfect fit for homes with a modern Texas décor!

If you’re in need of a beautiful home for all of this amazing art, we’re ready to build your new custom dream home. Give us a call at 210-494-5400. To be added to our private email list to receive newsletters, please sign up here.

Ghoulishly Great Halloween Events in San Antonio

pumpkin

Fall is finally here, and if you haven’t made plans yet for Halloween and you’re looking to have a little more fun this holiday than just passing out candy to trick-or-treating kids in Batman and ballerina costumes, here are a few exciting events you won’t want to miss!

All Hallows Eve Dinner & Ghost Tour at the Menger

The Sisters Grimm puts on an annual event inside the Menger – one of San Antonio’s most historic hotels known for its ghostly past. Guests get to feast on a special three course dinner inside the haunted Colonial Room Restaurant and dine by candlelight at the Halloween-inspired dinner table.

After dinner, a tour guide will take you through the hotel and recount stories of its past. Step inside the King Ranch Suite, reported to be the most active and haunted room inside the hotel. Following the Menger, you can go on a “Ghost Walk” of the downtown area. Available dates are October 23 and 24 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 pm and Oct. 30 and 31 at 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Go to the website to buy tickets.

Braune Farms Real Pumpkin Patch

Local farm, Braune Farms, will be open to guests who wish to experience a real pumpkin patch on October 17, 18, 24, and 25 from 11am to 4 pm, weather permitting. This is a great opportunity for the kiddos to enjoy picking out their own pumpkins, and see what they look like growing on the vine. The festivities include a hayride, face painting, a petting zoo with baby animals and access to a farm stand where you can buy seasonal veggies as well as handmade pumpkin pie and bread, made with Braune’s pumpkins. Braune Farms is located at 1300 Link Road, Seguin, TX.

South Texas Maize

Not far from San Antonio, in Hondo, Texas, you and your friends and family can get lost in a maize maze – that is, a labyrinth of corn stalks. It opens this year on September 19, and also sells pumpkins, food, offers hayrides, campfires and more. Click the link for details.

13th Floor Haunted House

If chills and thrills are what you’re looking for in October, the 13th Floor Haunted House is your best bet for a truly scary adventure. This year they’re showcasing two new attractions: “Into the Void” and “Burial Ground,” that sound just too creepy for us!

The fun starts on September 25 and runs through November 14, with some blackout dates during the week, so be sure to visit the website.  The closer it gets to Halloween, the more crowded they get, so we recommend spending the extra cash to get immediate access.

Happy Halloween!

Custom-Made Furniture for Your Custom Home

STD 1

If you’re going to spend the time and money to have a custom home built, why not fill that beloved home with some extraordinary custom furniture as well? If you plan ahead you can create a symbiotic environment and have furniture designed to fit the exact space it’s going to live in.

If this is something you’ve never considered, you may not know that San Antonio, and certainly Texas, is home to some brilliant and highly-skilled custom furniture designers, who can make furniture that’s either traditional or avant garde. Here are just a few local furniture designers/builders you might want to consider.

George Schroeder of Schroeder Design

George Schroeder has earned a reputation as one of the leading large scale metal artists in the United States, and we’re lucky that he’s located right here in San Antonio. Schroeder somehow manages to translate fluidity and energy into his pieces, so that they’re all incredibly creative and unique. Although the scope of his work really runs the gamut, from modern sculpture to paintings, his ability to construct magnificent custom furniture that are iconic pieces in any home is a rare gift.

Peter Zubiate of Zubiate Projects

Peter is known for his beautiful wood furniture and often works with local architects and builders to create specifically-designed furniture, including tables, chairs, beds, built-ins and unique pieces. Whatever you can think up, Zubiate can bring that vision to life.

WOOD by Alberto

Another talented, but perhaps lesser known woodworker in San Antonio is Alberto of WOOD by Alberto, who makes handmade, original Texas wood products, including furniture. He recently completed a commissioned project for a local home of stunning large custom barn doors that are connected via heavy duty metal wheels that allow the doors to slide open.

Cortese Brothers

Cortese Brothers is a family owned and operated furniture company in San Antonio. They work closely with customers to create furniture that’s beautiful yet affordable. They incorporate your initial design research into the finished piece.

Deep Fried Design

Although Andrew McGuire hails from Austin, we won’t hold it against him because his furniture is absolutely stunning. He makes stylish modern furniture like beds and tables using reclaimed wood. He has a photo on his website of a funky coffee table he made from a reclaimed gym floor. It’s clear this custom furniture maker not only thinks outside the box, but lives there.

If you already have the furniture and just need the perfect home to put it in, call us at 210-494-5400. To be added to our private email list to receive the Stone Creek Custom Homes newsletter, please sign up here.

How to Save Money on Your Mortgage

10698588_830576833640414_7718963893656289652_n

The process of obtaining a mortgage to build a new home can be confusing and stressful for anyone (and often is), but first-time home owners can be at a major disadvantage if they haven’t done their homework. Here are some things to consider before stepping into the potential quagmire of a home loan.

Find a Good Mortgage Lender

Don’t go with the first mortgage lender than comes your way. It’s a common misconception that all mortgage lenders are alike. We wouldn’t exactly compare them to snowflakes, but truth is each one is different in a variety of ways. Taking the time to find a lender that listens, is transparent and conscientious, and takes the time to explain details can establish a foundation for either a good or bad experience. A bad lender can cost you thousands of dollars by not responding in a timely fashion in order to lock in your mortgage rate. Also be aware that closing fees do vary from lender to lender.

While we don’t want to dissuade you from working with a bank that you trust, you might want to consider working with a local mortgage lender over a corporate giant where you’re little more than a number. You should also avoid finding a lender over the internet. Being able to sit down in front of your lender and talk face-to-face makes it easier to hold them accountable.

Do’s and Don’ts

Any good lender will tell you that when you’re considering making a big purchase such as property, you do not want to make any other significant purchases, such as buying a car. Hold off any big expenses until everything is signed, sealed and delivered!

Even if you’ve got the best credit score on the planet, it never hurts to prepare yourself by eliminating any debt that you owe. You can start now, before you’re even seriously considering, by paying off small credit cards. Whether you go through with your new home or not, this will help you save on interest and may even help you resist buying those new tires or pair of shoes!

If you do need help repairing your credit, check out a program through nfcc.org, who not only helps repair credit, but can also provide low interest mortgage payments.

Saving Money in the Long Run

It’s not in your lenders best interest to let you know that you can save literally thousands of dollars over the lifetime of your mortgage by making extra payments each year. It’s easier for most people to pay an extra $100 or $200 bucks a month, but you can pretty much do what works best for you. You might consider putting any return back on your taxes into the mortgage, that way it might not sting as much. You’ll be surprised to find that by doing this you can shave 7 to 10 years off the life of your mortgage.

We’re here when you’re ready! Please call us at 210-494-5400.
